Importing food-contact tableware into Germany is a product-specific exercise. A supplier’s brochure or generic certificate does not establish that the exact SKU and intended use meet every requirement. Ask for current evidence and have your compliance team review it before committing to volume.
1. Food-contact evidence
- Ask which documents support the exact material, SKU and intended use.
- Check the identity of the tested product, test conditions, report date, issuing laboratory and any limitations.
- Review traceability and any applicable declarations or supporting statements with your compliance adviser.
The EU framework for food-contact materials is Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004; good manufacturing practice is covered by Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006. Specific rules can also vary by material and Member State. European Commission overview ↗
2. Verify the supplier, not just the sample
- Confirm the legal seller, manufacturing facility, production responsibility and primary contact.
- Agree a reference sample and measurable acceptance criteria for size, finish, appearance, pack count and defects.
- Ask how batches are identified and what records can be supplied with the order.
- If a third-party certificate is presented, check its holder, site, scope, validity and issuing body.
3. Define the shipment document pack
Agree the commercial invoice, packing list, country-of-origin evidence, transport documents and any destination-specific documents before production starts. The appropriate set depends on the shipment and the agreed Incoterm.
4. Plan packaging responsibilities in Germany
Determine who is legally responsible for placing packaged goods on the German market and review registration and other obligations under the applicable packaging rules. The German Packaging Register’s import guidance ↗ is a useful starting point. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 applies from 12 August 2026, subject to its specific transitional provisions. EUR-Lex summary ↗
How Magnite approaches the discussion
We propose agreeing the required evidence list at enquiry stage and treating missing or expired documents as open items. We will not describe a test report or certificate as available until we can identify and share the actual current document.
This guide is an import checklist, not a legal opinion or a claim of Magnite Global certification. Your importer and advisers should assess the specific product and transaction.
